Origins and Development
In the late 1990s, a group of business leaders and eminent academics from developed economies came together to examine the impact of globalization on professional competence and workforce mobility.
Meeting in Vienna, the group identified the need for a global organization that could independently recognize and certify the skills, experience, and professional competence of individuals across national boundaries. The objective was to create a framework through which professionals could have their capabilities recognized internationally within a specified field of practice.
The group also proposed the accreditation of institutions and organizations providing professional training and development programs.
In October 1999, a Task Group was formed comprising eminent professors and experts from the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, France, Canada, Australia, Spain, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Singapore.
WCI was formally established at the beginning of the new millennium and was first registered in the United States in 2003. Today, its professional activities are coordinated internationally across the Americas, Europe, Asia, Oceania, and Africa.
Global Recognition of Professional Competence
WCI serves as a global authority in professional certification, drawing on the collective expertise of its international Councilors and professional advisors.
Its role is to recognize cross-national skills, competencies, professional practices, and experiential capabilities that demonstrate professional competence and reflect internationally accepted practices.
WCI provides a structured assessment framework for evaluating and certifying professional experience, workplace practices, skills, competencies, and professional capability.
The criteria for the award of a WCI professional credential include:
- relevant years of professional experience;
- demonstrated competence in a specialized field; and
- relevant qualifications obtained from recognized universities or WCI Accredited Institutions.
WCI Professional Credential Awards
WCI confers three progressive professional credential awards for individuals who meet the applicable eligibility requirements:
- Competent Level – World Certified Professional (WCP)
- Expert Level – World Certified Specialist Professional (WCSP)
- Leadership Level – World Certified Master Professional (WCMP)
These credential levels provide a structured pathway for recognising professional progression from demonstrated competence, through specialist expertise, to professional leadership.
WCI Course Accreditation
WCI also accredits eligible courses and programs offered by approved organizations, including universities, colleges, schools, professional institutions, and training companies.
The course accreditation process involves a detailed evaluation of areas such as:
- course content, structure, and duration;
- qualifications, experience, and competence of trainers;
- financial standing, governance, and integrity of the course provider;
- adequacy of facilities, learning resources, and support systems;
- methods of course delivery and assessment; and
- relevance of the course to specialized competence, professional development, and career progression.
The purpose of the accreditation process is to determine whether a course meets WCI’s established standards for quality, industry relevance, and professional development.
Public Verification of WCI Awards
All WCI awards are assigned a unique 10-digit identification number. The authenticity and validity of a WCI award can be independently verified through the “Verify Credential” facility on the WCI website by entering the assigned 10-digit number.
This verification feature provides employers, professional bodies, institutions, and other stakeholders with a convenient means of confirming the authenticity of WCI-issued awards.
